A multicentre presenting local traditions within agriculture and fishing trades. Situated in beautfiul surroundings at Nevernes in Nordland County. Lomsdal - Visten National Park
Lomsdal-Visten National Park has many attractions:
Strompdal Nature Reserve - The remains of Knut Strompdal's garden on Strompdal farm - Breivassfossen (Waterfall) - The view of the river "Lomselva" on the way up to Medheia - The beautiful lake Nedre Breivatn - The area at and around Lomsdal Farm - Gardfossen (Waterfall) next to Lomsdal Farm - Grunnvassdalen, a wild and beautiful valley. Helgeland Museum, Velfjord
At Strøm, approximately 5 kilometer from Hommelstø, you will find a collection of buildings, equipment and utilities. The exhibition provides a splendid picture of the fishing and farming industry back to the 1800-1900 century. The museum also has a Southern Sami exhibition and the famous mystery bag, which no one has opened. Website
War Museum and banquet hall
Memorabilias collected by Leif Torp, former employee at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corp., now retired. An extraordinary display of different objects representing both the Norwegian, the allied and the German sides, as well as written documentation from this period, 1940-45. Website
Velfjord Church (Nøstvik Church)
Northern Norway's oldest wooden church
Velfjord Church (also called Nøstvik Church) is made up of notched logs. It was completed in 1674. The church is located 2 km from Hommelstø and has many historical artifacts, such as the old altarpiece from 1641. Website
Tosen Chapel (Lande Chapel)
Tosen Chapel is a little 1700's church situated at Lande, approx. 15 km from Tosbotn. The pulpit and the altarpiece is from 1789 and the church bell from 1842. Website
Engavatnet - The mysterious lake
The lake that disappears
Engavatnet is a natural phenomenon which is unique in the Nordic countries. The lake has in the past caused fear, and still today researchers have a hard time explaining the phenomenon. The lake is apparently like most other lakes, until it suddenly disappears for then to reappear, a few days or maybe a few months later, apparently with fish and everything.
Brønnøy's highest mountain.
With its 1224 meters above sea level, Breivasstinden is Brønnøy Municipality's highest mountain. From the summit you have almost endless views in all directions and see the municipalities: Grane, Hattfjelldal, Bindal, Sømna, Vega and Vevelstad. Read more
A settlement from 1700 - 1800's, untouched in its original environment. There is a complete farm, and the houses are virtually unchanged since they were built in 1700 - and 1800's. Website
The mysterious bag
On one of the walls at Helgeland Museum, Velfjord a mysterious leather bag, dated to app. 1860, is on display. What we know is that the bag was delivered to the museum by Einar Mathisen Nordfjellmark in 1949, with the same warning that he had recieved: .."This bag must never be opened, terrible things will happen to the one who opens the bag.."
There have been many theories and speculations about the content of the bag, but it has never been opened, and what's inside is still a mystery. Website
